Is Sand Sculpture right for your event?
1) How many days does your event last? While a properly promoted appearance by Sand Sculptors at a one day event will
increase your attendance, the longer your event lasts, the better. This is because the longer your event lasts the more
free word of mouth advertising you get from attendees. Also attendees who were only planning to visit your event during
the first day or two will return to see the finished Sand Sculpture.
2) Does your venue have room for a big pile of sand? If you have a place near your concession area, this is ideal since
spectators returning to see progress on the sculpture are likely to make spontaneous purchases from the concessionaires.
3) Sand Sculpture is hard to stage but somewhat less difficult to clean up after. Prior to the event sand needs to be
selected and trucked into the venue. The sand needs to be prepped before it can be carved. Mark Chapman Sand Sculptors
always does a day of prep work before the event starts so that the opening day of the event can be spent carving. After
the event, depending on the expense associated with the sand, likelyhood of needing sand sculptors at future events at
the venue, and other factors, the sand may or may not need to be removed. Careful consideration of the logistics is
required to determine if sand sculpture is right for your event.
4) On average, prepping sand requires a 1 to 5 ratio of water to sand. Therefore a source of water is needed to do the
prep. A dump truck load of sand needs at least 1000 gallons of water. Usually delivery of water thru a garden hose is
marginally adequate. Much better would be a hydrant and firehose. Also requiring some thought would be where does the
water drain to. Building on soil is usually not a problem but sculpture built on pavement would need adequate drainage.
5) The above points not withstanding, Mark Chapman Sand Sculpture does have a proprietary system of doing small indoor
sand sculptures. The system is neat and tidy. A sculpture up to 4 feet tall is possible. Water is mixed into the sand
before the sand is brought to the venue. The sand is only damp while being prepped. Extensive measures are always
taken to control the mess but any sand that escapes containment drys instantly and is easily swept or vacuumned up.
